The paint aisle is confusing, but for most rooms you only need to make two choices: the finish (sheen) and whether you need a primer.

Finishes, from least to most shiny

  • Flat or matte: hides wall flaws best; good for ceilings and low-traffic rooms
  • Eggshell: a little sheen, easier to wipe; a common choice for living areas and bedrooms
  • Satin: more wipeable; good for kitchens, kids' rooms and hallways
  • Semi-gloss: tough and shiny; good for trim, doors and bathrooms

Do you need primer?

  • Yes, over patched spots, bare drywall and stains
  • Yes, when making a big color change, especially dark to light
  • Yes, over glossy surfaces (after a light scuff sanding)
  • Often not, when repainting a similar color over clean, sound paint

Buying tips

  • Get a sample and paint a large swatch; look at it morning and evening
