Re-caulk a tub or shower
Remove old, moldy caulk and lay a clean, watertight bead.
Fresh caulk makes a bathroom look new and keeps water out of the wall. The trick is complete removal of the old caulk and a dry, clean joint.
Remove the old caulk
- Cut along both edges of the old bead with a utility knife or caulk removal tool
- Pull and scrape it out; a plastic scraper protects tub finishes
- Clean the joint with rubbing alcohol to remove soap film
- Let it dry completely, ideally overnight
Apply new caulk
- Use 100% silicone or a kitchen and bath caulk labeled for tubs and showers
- Put painter's tape along both sides of the joint for a crisp line
- Fill the tub with water first so it settles to its working position
- Cut the nozzle small and run a steady, continuous bead
- Smooth it with a gloved finger or tool in one pass
- Pull the tape right away and let it cure for the time on the tube before using the shower
