Swapping a showerhead is one of the easiest bathroom upgrades, and a WaterSense-labeled model can cut hot water use too.
Steps
- Close the drain so nothing small falls in
- Unscrew the old head counterclockwise; wrap the shower arm in a cloth if you need pliers
- Clean old tape and mineral deposits from the arm threads
- Wrap new thread seal tape clockwise two or three times around the threads
- Screw on the new head by hand, then snug it gently; don't overtighten
- Run the water and check for drips; tighten slightly if needed
If the shower arm itself leaks inside the wall
Stop and call a plumber. Leaks inside the wall can cause hidden damage.
