Install a curtain rod
Brackets that stay put, and curtains that make the window look bigger.
Curtain brackets get pulled on every day, so they need a solid hold. Above most windows there's a wooden header, which makes this easier than it sounds.
Placement
- Mount higher and wider than the window frame: about 4 to 6 inches above and 4 to 10 inches beyond each side makes windows look bigger
- Measure the same distance up from the frame at both ends and check with a level
Steps
- Mark bracket positions; add a center bracket for rods over about 5 feet
- Drill pilot holes; the header above the window usually takes screws directly
- Where there's no wood, use anchors rated for the load
- Screw the brackets on, hang the rod and curtains, and check level
