Floating shelves hide their bracket inside the shelf. They look simple, but they rely on a solid connection to the wall, so studs matter here.

Before you start

  • Read the shelf's weight rating and what it assumes (usually screws into studs)
  • Find and mark studs along the shelf line
  • Check for wires and pipes; avoid the area directly above or below outlets and switches

Steps

  1. Draw a level line where the bracket's top edge will go
  2. Hold the bracket on the line and mark screw holes at the stud locations
  3. Drill pilot holes and screw the bracket to the studs, checking level as you go
  4. Use rated anchors for any holes that miss a stud, if the instructions allow
  5. Slide the shelf onto the rods and fix it with the set screws provided

If the shelf tilts down

A slight droop is common. Some brackets can be shimmed; otherwise make sure every screw is tight in a stud and keep heavy items close to the wall.
