Projects / Hanging and assembling
Hang pictures and mirrors securely
Get the height right, use the right hardware and hang it level.
Hanging a picture is simple, but the right height and hardware make it look professional and keep it on the wall.
Find the height
- A common rule: center of the art about 57 to 60 inches from the floor
- Over furniture, leave about 6 to 10 inches between the furniture and the frame
- Make a paper template the size of the frame to try positions with painter's tape
Hang it
- Weigh the item (stand on a bathroom scale holding it, then subtract your weight)
- Measure from the top of the frame to the wire pulled tight, or to the hanger
- Mark the hook position on the wall
- Use a picture hook rated for the weight, a drywall anchor or a stud
- For wide frames, use two hooks for stability, set level
Heavy mirrors
For heavy mirrors, use the mounting hardware supplied with the mirror, screw into studs or toggles rated for the weight, and get a helper to lift.
